You can use a WiFlyer (www.wiflyer.com) to *replace* your mode and get a router in the process... or, as others have suggested, use a router that has a "dial back-up" feature and just always use it in "back-up" mode.


Maybe talk to Jim T. since he ditched his SMC router a while ago on account of needing too many power-cycles. Possibly it still sits in his garage.
