Now, if you could tell me how to add a router to my RS-232 line that goes to the modem...
You can use a WiFlyer (www.wiflyer.com) to *replace* your mode and get a router in the process... or, as others have suggested, use a router that has a "dial back-up" feature and just always use it in "back-up" mode.

Maybe talk to Jim T. since he ditched his SMC router a while ago on account of needing too many power-cycles. Possibly it still sits in his garage.
I tossed it because of its repetitive hanging.

Oh man. All it might have needed could have been a re-flash.

You can buy a very good router for < $40.

A very good one? Which one would that be? The Barricade was a lot more. And with "good" I mean something without a Chinese wall wart that gets freaking hot.

IIRC my new Linksys 8-port was around $50. 4-ports are running around
$40.

I bought a Linksys before the SMC. It was DOA so I returned it. I didn't like the plastic enclosure anyhow. The SMC looks a whole lot more professional. Metal, built-in switcher supply and all that.
