...although my experience has been that while spendy ($40-$100) routers tend
to vary in quality, the really cheap ones (<$40) I've used pretty much
universally needed the occasional power cycling and were more likely to come
with those cheap wall-wart power supplies. For some people a really cheap $20
router and cycling power occasionally is perhaps still a win over the $100+
"very good" router that's rock solid. (I really wonder whether or not the $20
"Linkskey" on that page is trying to make you think "Linksys" though!)

Speaking of cost... did you notice that thread where Wal*Mart now has two $50
ATSC->composite video converters to choose from, on the shelves? I expect
we'll hit that $40 voucher point well before the end of the year now.

Stay away for the low end Belkin stuff. It had about 128 KB
throughput, even on the wired ports.

Since you are helping veterans who probably won't all be able to afford
big screen TV sets, do you know which ATSC converters are good? Walmart?
Radio Shack?


I haven't been able to find even one unit in the area. I've been to a
dozen places, and don't even find a spot on the shelves where they
should be. Three Radio Shacks, Wal-mart, Best Buy, Circuit City,
Target, several K-marts and some local stores, and no one even knows
what I'm talking about. I want to see them compared side by side, or at
the very least to find out which models use the same chip sets. I have
heard that several different brands are being built by one company, with
different cases, but without seeing them, I have no idea.


That's pretty much like this answer I usually got: "Huh?"

Joel has now started a thread further up, "More ATSC converter stuff",
with some good links in there. Still, I am not looking forward to all
that DTV because for us it'll mean we won't be able to watch TV on days
with lots of clouds and thus multipath, or when the Fedex and DHL
freighters lumber into Mather Field. They do a loooong final and are in
the RF path almost all that time. Analog pumps a wee bit but DTV
completely falls off the cliff.


I doubt I'll be able to pick up any TV signal at all. Most stations
are 60 miles, or more away on fairly level ground. 20 miles south of
here I installed a new TV antenna for some friends on a little hill and
picked up 31 stations, scattered from Miami to Georgia. Once in a while
you can make out an image in the snow form the PBS station on Ch. 5 in
Gainesville, but not at my house. There is a hill to the north of me
that blocks it out.
