Use a router?

GRC rates me as "All ports are stealth".

I understand that will help a lot - but seems to be impossible to use
in a dial-up situation.
And yeah, i am rated the same, BUT my credit card was hacked and
fortunately the bank caught it.
So i would like to add a firewall to help.
Now, if you could tell me how to add a router to my RS-232 line that
goes to the modem...

A firewall won't help much in that case. The problem is clicking on
"yes" too quickly on the wrong website. I recommend a good spyware /
virus scanner (personally I use McAfee) and using your computer from a
limited account (i.e. not administrator). Our computers stay squeeky
clean that way despite the fact my kids and my wife are using the
computers too.

I use AVG, and Win98SE does not recognize accounts.

Okay, that is going to be a bit difficult. Perhaps upgrading to
Windows 2000 is an option (I'm still using it). But you might find
yourself in need for a new soundcard.

Or get a new computer altogether. I recently picked up a 'broken' DELL
SX270 with a 3GHz P4 cpu for 50 euros (complete with Windows XP
license). All it needed was new capacitors on the mainboard. Quite a
lot are on sale right now because of this flaw. This computer will run
Windows XP without any problems.
