In my first electronics lab (1989) we already had regular "bench" power
supplies.
On the other hand, the first power electronics lab I took where you
*constructed* your own transformer from the cores they had available -- and
then slowly watched its performance as you ramped up a VARIAC to 120V --
*that* was fun. Especially after you shorted the secondary to measure the
mutual inductance... BUZZZZZZZ... those were some rather angry cores... (we
didn't ramp the VARIACS to 120V with the secondaries shorted, though --
nowhere near that :-) ).
