It's an unmoderated USENET newsgroup, so there's not much that you can
do directly. If you pay attention to the chatter about it, you'll see
that much of the spam is coming through Google Groups. If enough folks
deny them their business (and therefore ad revenue) they may pay
attention. If not -- not.

The problem is HOW to make that happen...

Currently I have _65_ "good guys" white-listed who post from Google
Groups.

One might argue that these 65 ARE contributing to Google profits.

Perhaps we should filter 100% against Google Groups posters to force
the "good guys" to raise hell with Google? Or cause them to change to
another provider?

Is there a consensus??

As one of those 65, I can't possibly see how I contribute to Google.
(?)
I mean, I use their service(s) all the time, and I NEVER click on
their suggested ads.
If folks want to pay Google "per impression", well then, my impression
is they're just stupid!

For example, I once needed a database from a site and instead of
paying their OUTRAGEOUS subscription fee, I simply wrote a script to
harvest the info, web page-by-page, 10 entries at a time. Sure, it
took a few days, but the computers did all the heavy lifting.

So you'll understand I have to laugh out loud when these sites claim
their many thousands of "hits", and actually charge advertisers
accordingly. Nobody is watching. At least, not me...

But yes, I wish these spammers would get a life...
Real engineers don't want that crap anyway.
