Can anything be done about the low-lifes that post spam in this

Two suggestions.
One, convert this group to a moderated group and change moderators
once a month. Nobody gets stuck with a rotten job if you limit the
time any one person is a moderator.
Do you have ANY idea what is involved in changing the moderation of a
newsgroup? The moderator of one group died in a car wreck, and it was
over six months before most of the messages were re-routed to the new
moderator. The message that weren't re-routed were lost, in the dead
man's in box.
Two, move this group to Yahoo Groups. The Ltspice group on Yahoo is
very successful and has very few problems with SPAM. The most
noticeable problem is somebody announcing they will be out of the
office for the next week.
You can't move a newsgroup to Yahoo or anywhere else. It exists on
NNTP servers around the world, along with a couple dozen crappy HTML
portals that ignorant people and criminals use to post stupid ideas and
'spam'. Let's say that you create a new group on Yahoo. How do you tell
people where to find it? What do you do when Microsoft finally forces
Yahoo to sell out and they shut down everything that isn't swimming in
new money? If it is shut down, that archive is lost, forever.
If we started a new group on Yahoo we could post a message in this
group every few days telling random users about the new list and Jim
Thompson could send a notice to his white hat list. With respect to
Microsoft we don't know what they will do. But even if Microsoft did
in the future shut down Yahoo groups at that time we could switch back
to a newsgroup. Perhaps by that time the spammers will have gone
away. If there is little or no activity in this group the spammers
will fade away on their own.
