Re: Audio amplifier as AC power generator ?

Just received the current issue of QST. There's
an article in it describing a transmitter where
they use a 4CX25000. It has a copper tubing tank
where they push air through the inside of the tubing
to cool it (the coil, not the tube).

In the military I worked on one a lot bigger, with
huge belt driven blowers (by 2HP motors, as I
recall). Not exotic, just big. I proposed a simple
design change, and it got approved in less than 9
months. Is that a record? Bureaucracy: it may
be slow, but it's not fast. :-)

The largest transmitter I maintained used three 65 KW EEV Klystrons.

Some of us made the change, then submitted the paperwork while
knowing full well that we would be long gone before it was ever
processed. At least we made notes in the manuals about WHY they were
done. Most of the time, a part was no longer available, and you had to
improvise to stay on the air. Otherwise, you would be off the air for
years. One transmitter at Ft. Greely had been waiting on a variable
capacitor for over 18 months when I got there. We had another in stock
with more plates, but was identical construction. A few minutes with a
hacksaw and a mill *** file, and I had the part I needed. :)
