You don't do it unless you've got the prospect of doing enough busines
to cover these costs.

I just did precisely for a 3 month consultancy job. It is not that hard or a
lot of work AND 'round 'ere (DK)

1) the going rates for freelancers are about 2-3 times the salaries of
regular staff

2) you do not have to share the 'values' of the business nor buy into all
the other corprat crap like 'engagement' therefore it is easy to get work.

3) you avoid the top rate tax on personal income simply by keeping most of
the profits in the businessand set your 'wages' below the tax threshold; you
only pay 25% at the end of the year .

4) if you need to buy some stuff for the business it is ex VAT and goes from
the profit thus allowing one to aquire f.ex. an oscilloscope for the
business at net money instead of paying 60% tax on salary and then pay the
scope from the sad remains.

5) my fixed expenses are few and small so earning money is fun!!

people worry too much, thats why they do not get their act together and
start working for themselves (whether salaried or self-employed) instead of
slaving for shareholders and taxpeople!
