Ok, SWMBO has declared that the office and lab carpets are really shot.
Having regular new carpet installed isn't really an option or desired,
partly because there is a 2" mud bed (concrete) over the floors and the
procedure would involve gluing on new tack strips and several days wait.
Can't shut down the office that long.
These aren't glued so I won't use them but they show the concept:

In Europe I could buy these with tough foam backer on them and some sort
of milky goo was spread out, then laid down. Not the tough stinky glue
they use in office buildings but something that could be easily picked
up again later. Best of all I could lay some tiles, move the lab bench
over, do some urgent work on it, then continue laying carpet tiles and
so on. Needless to say, this is all high traffic area so it has to be
tough stuff. But not the ugly indoor/outdoor stuff.
Artistic side note, rotate the carpet tiles by 45 degrees when layng
them out, the eye is less responsive to errors in layout. i.e don't
have the carpet tile edges paralllel to the walls.
Yes, that plus you can rotate checkerboard style. I showed John's pics
to my wife. She was not too enthused :-(
The floor looks great.
