Hello,#1..
As an electronic design entrepreneur I have been doing all kinds of
things lately, but recently I was presented with the opportunity to do
some industrial automation and control. It has been many years since
I have used ladder logic diagrams and I used to intern for a company
where I drew such diagrams using Cadkey software. So right now I am
looking into teaching myself about the Allen-Bradley Micrologix 1100
platform and perhaps also doing some servo motion control for yet
another project. So, at the beginning of this learning curve, here
are some prelim questions as I take the 1st steps on my quest...
1) Is there a better newsgroup dedicated to such things? Doing a
google group search for "allen bradley" and "micrologix" reveals some
really outdated and low activity groups and of course non-sense like
porn groups or some such.
2) I am under the impression that I use software like the RSlogix500
to program the controller, but is it true that I have to do my wiring
diagrams in 3rd party software like Autocad? It seems strange that I
cant do my ladder logic wiring diagrams in AB software.
I am happy for this opportunity and it is strange to use AllenBradley
modules instead of designing my own modules from scratch, but given
the budget and timeline of the projects, designing my own controllers
from scratch is just not practical.

The MicroLogic 1000 model sucks!, not only are they limited for
that they can do on input/output options, there is a whole crap load
out there with bad memory chips that, after x number of hours of operation start to fail on boot ups. Reloading of the program cures it how ever it gets worse..
THEY ARE VERY PRICEY! in both hardware options and software for the
module types.
Other makers of PLC's have come a long ways!,
I just recently did a project using DirectLogix PLC's//
The software under 400 Bucks and it programs all of their PLC's .
The only thing that is different is the programming cables which I
got a complete kit of them at 100 bucks or you can make your own.
The cost of the units are like less than half of what AB wants and
less than half the hassles.!
They ask no questions and are happy as hell to sell it to you..
Directlogic's are not the only ones but it gives an idea..
Most of the popular names in electronics have PLC's Many of them
with built in screens for users that can mount directly in a panel
etc..
