It'd be better if they used a chart that showed the standard deviation along
with the average, so you'd have some idea as to how "unusual" of a year this
is...
There are lots of charts and data available through the website. For
example, a historical summary year-by-year of Eastern Arctic coverage
since they started gathering the data in 1971:

As for "unusual" last summer's low point of coverage in Western Arctic
was the lowest ever observed, 2006 the lowest ever observed in the
Eastern Arctic (as you can see from the graph referenced).
