An electric water heater has a thermodynamic efficiency of roughly 10%

10% ? Where does the other 90% go ?

Electric water heating on demand is fabulously efficient.

Now for someone of your ignorance, I can understand, but Jim and John,
ostensibly intelligent beings, also seem to have missed the footnote. It
was:

[1] as compared to an ideal heat pump.

In other words, instead of wasting the power directly, use it to run an
ideal reverse-Carnot cycle heat pump, taking heat from its surroundings.
Heat pumps move heat AND produce heat, so the efficiency is *several times
greater* than a "100% efficient" resistive heating element.
