Since it seems that the EchoStar will never be available, which is
the beter converter: Magnavox or Philco?
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_CECB_units>
is a table of the various boxen, with real manufacturer and what
chip-sets they use. Which says that both the Magnavox and Philco
units are made by Funai. Probably the same thing.
I have the Digital Stream DTX9900 and it's pretty good with weak
snowy signals. Not good with ghosts. I gather that most of them
have that problem.
Right now the situation is that most stores, at least here, are notoriously out of boxes. So after my regular call around among the stores netted a "Yes, we've got about 75 Insignia boxes" on day I did what everybody else seems to do, a mad dash to the car and get there right away. Arriving about half an hour later it seemed the stash had already dwindled to about half. Whew. At least we got our boxes now. Got to grab whatever is there, regardless of what reviews say. No analog pass-thru but heck, got no choice, so it'll be the coax switch kludge :-(
Walmart would have had the box I wanted but too far away. The clerk said something like: "Once a load arrives it's all gone within minutes". I guess people start heading out there when they see a Walmart truck exiting Missouri Flat.
