I don't necessarily disagree with you.
But I stand by the eariler statement that it will not take very long
for the average American to realize that opening up new drilling
doesn't make any difference at today's pump.

Even IF it drives speculation from the market (a useful thing, I
agree), we're already conditioned to spend $4.00 + a gallon, so I
doubt the oil companies would leave that money on the table,
REGARDLESS of how much the oil costs them after the leases shake
loose. In other words, since supply will not have changed in the
short term, the supply-demand price motivators won't move much either.

And of course, one would have to assume that the housing crisis
doesn't' cripple the system first! Which brings me to the notion of
"too big to fail"...

Huh?!! History has shown entire EMPIRES have failed.
Now we want to naively believe Fredie & Fannie can't possibly fail?
Sure they can. And they can fail in collossal ways!!

That's not to say that we won't intervene, or that cooler heads will
ultimately prevail.
- but to think that just because intervention on some level is
inevitable, it will be sucessful, is another story.

Of course gas won't go back below $4, but that's good! Every summer
we send (basically) our youngest grandchild to Valley Youth Theater
summer (day) camp. Since $4 gas it's no sweat to drive to downtown
Phoenix from far-west Ahwatukee Foothills during rush hour. I love
it. I can hardly wait for the leftist loonies to have to ride
bicycles ;-)
