Brings up a question: In my case (Firefox) most PDF show up right in the
browser, some others randomly go the download path. What gives? It seems
pretty much willy-nilly.

Same here. However, I have a partial fix for Firefox. See:
<http://www.pdfdownload.org>
It gives quite a bit of control over what to do with a PDF.

Also, in Firfox, make sure the default download action is to ask
what to do next, not dump it in the default download dumpster folder.

Tools -> Options -> Main -> Always ask me where to dump files.

I've got that checked. But it sometimes, maybe 5% of cases, decides to
open in Acrobat and not in Firefox. That's usually when things crash
since Acrobat is the SW that crashes the most here in the office, by far.

Then give up on Acrobat. Switch to Foxit:
<http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php>
I have both Acrobat 8.1.2 and Foxit 2.3 installed. However, Foxit is
the default PDF viewer. It hasn't crashed yet, but I did have to
download some Chinese fonts and a JPEG viewer. It's also MUCH faster
than Acrobat. I switched because of the same problem you're having.
Adobe Acrobat just crashes too often.

But there will come a point where you can't hold the rifle steady
anymore ;-)

I'm into weapons of mass destructions. Point, shoot, ka-boom, and
clean up the mess. No need to carefully aim. Ballistic targetting is
so passe. Advanced guidance systems, target designators, and gyro
stabilized platforms are for me.
