Careful? As in the case of the hockeystick curve?

The hockey-stick data wasn't a model, but rather the ineptly-filtered
presentation of raw data. Mann certainly screwed up, because he didn't
understand exactly how his filtering procedure worked. Even there, the
peer-reviewing process finally worked and his curves were eventually
discredited.

Modelling is a lot harder to get right, and I'd expect the modellers
to be a lot more careful about testing their models and the referees
to be a lot demanding about the quality and thoroughness of the
testing.

Which isn't to say that the process can't ever go wrong - but the
IPCC's remit is to review all the peer-reviewed work on the earth's
climate, and they are going to notice if some published modelling work
disagrees with the rest.
