After Gore said in 1999 that he "took the initiative in creating the
Internet" I never listened to any of his stuff anymore.
But that is a correct statement, unlike the "Al Gore claimed he
invented the Internet" lie that his opponents converted it to.
Only problem is, long _before_ his baby "High Performance Computing and
Communication Act of 1991" I already used the web extensively. That was
in Europe but there were plenty of sites and contacts into the US and
other countries. The guys who truly did it were not politicians, in my
case and that of my first employer it was CompuServe. Heck, Gore hadn't
even been in politics when that company was formed in 1969.

In my eyes people in office who brag too much lose credibility. Same for
people not in office.

I only wish I could rememeber when I first used the net. I had a 2400 or
4800 bps modem back then. If I power up my old 486 I might get an idea bit I
do recall using using the Mosaic browser before Netscape came out.

I started out with 1200bps down and 300bps up.

Funny thing is some sites didn't take much longer to load back then than
some do now with a 6.5Mbps connection from a premium ISP.

That's because the whole concept of efficiency went out the door. Just like with software and operating systems. My first PC had 512kB of RAM. Nowadays you need at least a thousand times as much to write "Hello World".

When I picked my first international flights on the web it was a completely text-based web site called "Sabre". 2-3 minutes, done. In February I booked an international flight on the "modern" web. Took about an hour, lots of graphics stuff flashing about, site crashed numerous times, gave up, did it over the phone instead. This is called progress. The SNR was so much better back then.
