Re-open the WPA, then put them to work filling potholes and repairing
rusty bridges for $5 a week?

You want to trust the repair of our major thoroughfare's bridges to camp
convicts?

I think the OP meant "basic maintenence" rather than "repair". Painting and
filling potholes, for example, should be OK for tehm to do. I think a lot of
convicts would be able to do that work; actually, I think that, if there were
more emphasis on teaching them how to get, do, and keep a job, the recidivism
rate, esp. for non-violent convicts, would be much lower.

You're clueless about how the WPA worked, just as you are with
everything else that matters ;-)

Yes, if you didn't work, you didn't eat. It was meant to provide
work, and teach new marketable skills during the depression. It spurred
private industry into expansions, as well.

All the main streets of my hometown, Huntington, WV, were constructed
of bricks over a granite block foundation, by the WPA.

My school bus used a concrete WPA bridge on US Hwy. 25 that was built
by the WPA in 1937. Other than a little mildew it still looked new, 30
years later. The WPA took a lot of roads from rut filled dirt roads to
paved during its short existence.
