From install (over 2 years ago) I never allowed XP to update. Since then
have not picked up any crud, or experienced any of the problems that seem
rife with XP. (touch wood!).


I have two PC's and a Mac that have XP and all the updates, and have never
had a problem. With what is XP rife?



I keep my XP machines updated. Just put SP3 on my home and work laptops. I was talking with my boss because his machine has an AMD processor and I know SP3 had/has specific issues with AMD processors where it'll go into a repeatedly rebooting state.

I wish you all would state what hardware you have.

I too do not update XP on any hardware I have, and no problems.

Those machines I have had problems are an HP Compaq 6510b and clone machines.

Once I turned off the updates, no more problems.

I do not use AMD.

Last month I did the SP-3 upgrade, had problems with error messages on bootup which MS customer service fixed for me without charge. Worked well for several weeks. Then a week or so back a "security upgrade" was pushed and my computer was back to rebooting itself without warning. Thens I got an error message that had MS recommending a patch to SERVICE PACK 2!!!

Just an hour ago I removed that security upgrade and turned off auto update.

Too bad MS can't leave well enough alone. And don't get me started with Office 2007, what a POS.
