Anyone who lives in California deserves it ;-)
There's nothing you can get in California that I can't get in Arizona,
cheaper and with easier access. I absolutely despise crowding and
masses of people.

How about a good variety of good local microbrews?

There's a Rock Bottom (location not shown on that list), near me at
Ray Road and I10... about 7 miles. They even have a nice wheat beer
;-)

I also have one or two within 7 miles, and ten within 10 miles, and i
haven't counted but maybe over 100 within 50 miles. Does your counts
scale so well?
Our population _density_ is WAY BELOW that of Californica. Thankfully!

Wow! Just looked up the population density. Downtown San Francisco
is at 15x to 20x as densely populated as Phoenix ;-(

The whole town is 49 square miles, with nowhere to expand; not even
room for more houseboats.
If (IF!) they can ever fill up the forests of new condos that they're
building or just finished, it will go up more. Luckily, we passed
"prop M" which defines "downtown", and lets it be as outrageous as it
likes, but keeps the dense stuff and high-rises confined there.
Mostly.
My neighborhood is green and quiet, 20-mile views, adequate street
parking. We have a "village" just down the hill, and a real canyon,
with rocks, stream, and critters, two blocks away. I can climb Mount
Davidson, or walk on Ocean Beach, and often be totally alone, not
another human in sight. SF is the ideal mix of city and wilderness.
Manhattan or LA or Chicago or Houston would drive me nuts.
John
