Agreed, although have you ever tried NoMachine NX? It does quite well, even
over relatively slow connections. (Effectively your PC becomes an X-server,
but rather than sending the entire raw X data stream, they obtain a form of
compressions by only sending the diffs.) It has a free edition that I've
found quite useful.
