I often go to Terman library for such ventures, but more and more of
their information is on computer networks that require campus
accounts. I'd hate to think I'd have to join the IEEE to read their
journals, most of which are silly articles by academics.

You have to spend an obscene amount of fees, joining each separate
group, plus a "digital library" fee to get access to papers.

Two years ago I told them to shove it, I'll just go to Hayden
Engineering Library (ASU).

They still keep sending "You can still renew" notices ;-)

and many of the Stanford libraries will let any schmuck off the
streets read their books. On-line access is another story. I guess to
be completely clear here, the documents are on-line AT the library
using computers that require passwords. More computers, less books.

The only good news here is some authors put their IEEE papers on the
web on their own websites. Probably in violation of IEEE terms.

Probably not in violation if you didn't grant IEEE copyright-holder
status in the first place.

I'm not a Stanford Alum. I did go to grad school at Santa Clara
University, and they don't let alumni in the library. And they wonder
why I don't send them any money!

Stanford does/did have this odd "industrial" plan that corporations
could buy into to get better access. You could check out books for
instance, though at a hefty premium.
