That's the idea, and it works, as long as it isn't pushed too far. We get certain devices in the shop for repair and recal in which the designer apparently expected the user to dial in a fraction of a volt. Even with a new variac (they tend to get sloppy with age)this requires a lot of back-and-forth and perhaps tapping on the knob to get an exact-enough value. Still, for what it's doing, it's difficult to imagine any other approach that wouldn't involve several times the cost and complexity and, most importantly for one of our customers, the ability to survive gross and prolonged abuse.
