Yeah... in that case Windows has the same problem as Linux, of course.
I guess the manufacturers figure it's not worth an extra $0.25 for the
relatively small percentage (<20%?) of users who require more than one USB to
RS-232 cable simultaneously.
The most annoying part is that nowhere on any USB to RS-232 cable that I've
seen has it been disclosed whether or not a unique serial number has been
programmed. :-(
With
the FTDI-based adapters I think you get the serial number as a part of
the basic chip
The newers ones you do (e.g., FT232R), whereas the older ones required the
outboard EEPROM. (The newer ones also have a pretty lousy -- but good enough
for USB -- 8MHz oscillator, whereas the older ones required an outboard
ceramic resonator or crystal.)
Could do it according to which USB
bus/port it's plugged into, I suppose.
I've read that's easy to do with udev rules (never tried it myself though); I
don't know whether or not it's readily doable in Windows.
