But there are people who teach it as literal fact to children, that
believe the whole document to be literally true, that it should be the
basis of of our laws.

It is these people I would ridicule.

Now you're talking about fundamentalist Islamists. Fine, please ridicule
them. In the USA, schools can't even mention creationist theories, some of
which are worth mentioning.

There should be no rule against saying, "There are people who believe in
Biblical creation". Teaching ABOUT religions is not equal to TEACHING
religion. You sound like you would deny students the benefit of learning
about different cultures and their histories, customs, traditions, and so
on.

Thanks,

I'll try to illustrate (some bits ripped from Alan Watts.)

A Teacher

Ok class we'll learn about where everything came from....

There's 2 models..
The Ceramic Model.
And the
Automatic Model.

People that accept the Ceramic Model believe the universe was
engineered (perhaps for us alone) by a god or gods.
For example, Christians believe Earth and everything has been
manufactured by a creator with a human personality.
Christians believe God created the universe about 6000 years ago.

People that accept the Automatic Model believe the universe is on
automatic.
Matter and energy are on automatic.
Scientists observe the behavior of matter and energy and are getting
better everyday to predict what matter or energy will do.
From current observations of matter and energy the current theory is
that about 14 billion years ago something went poof!

Any questions...

Student1: 'Which one is most likely bull***?'

Student2: 'Shut up Joey you're an ***.'

Student3: 'Is this on the test?'

Student4: 'Which do you believe in?.'

Student5: 'So..what's this got to do with welding?'

Student6: 'When's this class end? My babysitter has to go at 8pm.'
