So, how did the author of Genesis know about about the earth being formless
with the land under the water and the land rising out of the water?
He made it up.
He was wrong, it would seem. Which is hardly surprising unless you
believe in divine inspiration.
The Earth was formed by acretion of material from the protoplanetary
disc. It was initially molten (inevitable given the enormous
gravitational energy released by the process). Eventually it cooled
enough to form a solid crust, some time *after* that it was cool enough
for liquid water to exist on its surface.
