Would that this were true in practice. There are plenty of standard
libraries that are well tested and developed by experts NAGLIB for
instance being a very old example. But there are also no end of
programmers that try to roll their own code without understanding any of
the intricacies. Your fixed seed N-R sqrt being a case in point.

To really rub the point home, look at proliferation of HTTP based
download managers (read data pirates) that are being created instead
of using safe, well tested, reliable, and restartable FTP which is
included on all current major OS's. What are those webheads thinking?

If you want to download a single file, FTP offers no advantages over HTTP,
is more complex, has more overhead, and makes it harder to secure both the
server and the network. Also, the lack of metadata with FTP can be a
problem for non-English locales.

I have actually looked at the mechanism used in both protocols, and
FTP wins on all counts. When i DL files i always look for the FTP
link as it is more secure for my end and does not suffer from a
bazillion flavorizations.
Let me summarize, FTP comes with the OS and is tied in to all browsers
that i have tried. Why would i wish to gunk up my system with 57
varieties of unneeded software to do what i can already do?
