My advice:
Get rid of verizon or whatever it is, and let them know why.

Easier said than done. In most areas of the US one (and only one) of the large telcos has a monopoly. Good old Missy Bell. Same in our neck of the woods. The only alternative would have been the cable TV company but they wanted outrageous fees unless I'd also subscribed to cable TV. And that ain't going to happen.

Yes it can be problematic.
In the Netherlands there is the xs4all news server, if you use them
as ISP, then you have access to it I think.
I have sort of a direct link (direct.adsl) with the telco (KPN),
and no ISP in that sense, no email, no web page, no 'portal', and
MOST important: No problems.
I used about 6 or more 'ISPs' before this.
They all sucked, and had huge down times.
This is also 10 Euro a month cheaper.
So, the Usenet servers I use are *free* servers, although you need to register.
There is actually a newsgroup
alt.free.newsservers', that is how I found these services.
The web server is on my desk, the ftp server the same, the DNS name server the
same, and the SMTP (mail) server the same, all in one PC.
All on 24/7.
And guess what? No down time of any significance since 2004!
Had to replace a fan, and insert some PCI cards.... took some time
in the early days.... These days I can switch to the backup server in
a few seconds.

All I have to do is pay every year for the domain registration.
Unlimited email addresses, unlimited webs pace (I have a terabyte disk hehe),

ISP is _really_ a ripof for people who have no clue about how the Internet works.
Or do not know how to run a Linux box as server at home.

Not really. I pay $25/mo for ISP but use it only the way you use KPN, to get on the web. Email is a different entity, usenet (now) yet another, and so on. You can't get a bare bones DSL line for much less than that.

The only reason I do not run a Usenet server here is the bandwidth of my Internet connection is not big enough.
So much for 'little Usenet traffic' that Verizon quotes as reason.
It is exactly opposite that, ISPs try to get rid of Usenet because it is the biggest traffic load on the their system.
This is really true, I know.

Non-binaries cause much traffic? I seriously doubt that, considering that some kids in the neighborhood are downloading complete movies.
