My friend is having his house rebuilt. Before the drywall gets put up, he wants to run phone wires. We are trying to figure out what kind of cable to buy, but we have received conflicting advice.
One person told us to use Category 5e cable with 8 conductors. He said you don't use all 8 conductors, you just connect the ones that you need. Someone else told us this will not work because we will not be able to connect 8 conductor cable to the inside wall portion of a typical phone jack faceplate, which will have a 4 pin connector.
If you wire a house with Cat5e you normally fit RJ45 face plates (eg the ones used for a network) and then you use an adaptor like this to connect a phone to it...

I think for the USA you use RJ45 plug to RJ11 socket adaptor?
go for that. mixing phone service into cat5e cables will lead to a mess
in later life. do you want to go from each box to a central point and distribute the service from there? or wire from box to box?
things to keep in mind. but don't mix phone into cat54 cables
and expect not to run into trouble.
