I guess quartz watches ave been tried elsewhere too - in France as well. In the 'musee du temps' in Briancon they have a watch on display with the electronics in a tiny metal can with something like 8 wires - like the 741 used to come in a can, but only 3 mm diameter or so. The French brand is out of buseness now.
The top floor is interesting - with ancient reference clocks from pendulums with a microsope to check the amplitude and switches to send out the time signals to the first atomic clock (with an HP tube "contains cesium - not radioactive - no user servicable parts inside").
