The units not achieving focus lock. The sequence of events for this and most
other Pioneer units is as follows:
Load
Check for disc present- this is done by cycling the laser on in the pickup
and sweeping the lens for a FOK signal.
If FOK=No good then go to next tray in multi-cd, or stop and display no disc
on single cd units.
If FOK=Good then spindle motor activated and unit goes for tracking lock.
If tracking and focus lock are OK, then the unit puts the servos for focus
and tracking in closed loop mode, and normal playback begins.
Knowing this sequence we can determine that your unit is failing to achieve
focus on the disc. Either you have a bad pickup assembly, a bad ribbon cable
from the pickup to the main PCB, or the decoder IC on the main pcb is
defective. Most likely is a bad ribbon cable, as this was a very common
failure for this unit. I do not know if the ribbon is available as a
separate part, it's been a long time since I've worked on one of these.
