I'm planning to repair a faulty stereo boom box of mine.
Basically, the stereo powers up just fine... but it's hardly
outputting anything at all on the left channel. The left channel is
barely audible at all. I know it's not the left speaker itself
because I've already checked.
The right channel is extremely loud compared to the left channel. I
get the impression that it's actually abnormally loud, as though
*maybe* the right channel is doubly amplified and the left channel is
hardly amped at all. And the volume control seems completely whacked.
A gradual turning of the volume knob clockwise in a 45-degree angle
will make the volume go up and down every other degree, but generally
gets louder and louder in the long run. Imagine a sinusoidal
waveform, with a linearly increasing maximum amplitude.
Anyway, I'm planning on repairing this stereo. Considering these
symptoms, are there any suggestions on where I should start looking?
If it's a problem with the amp, I'm wondering why the volume controls
would act so strangely.
