You need first and foremost a proper outside ground for lightning/surge
protection. The standard power company or cable short ground rod is simply
insufficient for proper ground dissipation.
The only and best protection for the ac line is a completely isolated power
source. Look for the power converters that use a mechanical flywheel to
convert the ac into a motor/flywheel movement then back to a generator. The
second best is the constant voltage transformer system. Third would be
something like the ONEAC power converter systems that actually converts the
AC line to DC and charges a battery and then reconverts it back to AC (but
you are at the mercy of the converter working correctly).
