Many DVD/CD players actually have two separate lasers...one for DVD and one for
CD disks. Even if there is only one, there is usually a (mechanically)
separate tracking mechanism for each format (different servo coils, etc).
Thus, it is easy for one format or the other to die. If you can't fix it by
removing a stray hair or dust particle...probably cheaper to replace the
machine.
