Samsung players are not that great, IMO.

Most players produced today have two lasers contained within one optical pickup
assembly. Both lasers usually work with one set of optical instruments inside
the pickup and their beams are directed to one photosensor.

Sometimes, you can have the DVD laser (operates at the red range) go marginal
while the CD laser (operates at the infrared range) is still perfectly
functional

One solution is to attempt a thorough cleaning of the insides of the optical
pickup, cleaning the grating, tangent mirror, prism, objective lens, lasers,
photosensor, etc. However, some pickups will not allow the disassembly
necessary to gain access to those parts without causing damage.

Another possibility is to airblast the innards of the pickup with compressed
air to blow out any dust that may have settled onto any of the optical
components and are doing nothing but intercepting the beam.

If the pickup had been exposed to smoke, particularly cigarette smoke for
extended periods, it's also possible that a residue could have been left behind
which will also intercept the beam and cause a malfunction.

Whatever the problem, if cleaning doesn't repair the problem or the required
kind of cleaning isn't possible, your only economical option would be
replacement of the player.

For new players, consider only Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer, or JVC. These seem to
be the only brands that make fairly consistently reliable DVD players for
reasonable prices. - Reinhart
