They get damaged for a number of reasons. They can be damaged over time
because of powerline glitches. Another source of damage can happen when
a lamp burns out. Sometimes the lamp will short out temporarily when the
filament burns out. This can briefly draw a heavy current through the
dimmer. Also the strong induction which results can raise the voltage a
lot across the dimmer when the lamp filament finally opens.
