The overheating is why they fail. I've measured them at 165 degrees on numerous
sets. Other thoughts include the electrolytic capacitors near the chip, which
I've yet to see any ever bad, and solder connections around the board which is
common. Newer models came with a larger heat sync to "fix" the overheating
problem. There really is no way to get around it, the chip runs very hot.
