That's along the lines I was thinking for the modem issue. A bad cable
may have been jiggled back into working.
Depending on the Windows (I am assuming also) version, there could be
something on the MS knowledgebase about not completely shutting down.
The resulting hard boot causes the scandisk. The slowness could be
resources going low, a problem with at least some versions of Windows.
The best thing right now probably is...what operating system, what
microprocessor, how much RAM and hard drive space free, how is the
swapfile set up?
