  Before you type your password, credit card number, etc.,
 be sure there is no active key logger (spyware) in your PC.

Maybe it means incorrect region? That wouldn't explain the problem with home-burned discs though...
I'd start with a good cleaning. I doubt the DVD assy. would be available, but it might need a new laser - expensive..
