It might taste good, but it ain't good for you. :)
That shows what little you know about Spam.
Hence the :)
It was a military food
ration to start with, Its a vital part of my emergency food supply
during hurricane season here in Florida. So what if I have to break my
normal diet for a few days, or even weeks while there is no electricity
or running water? It is an already cooked protein source that you need
to survive. Some other canned goods, crackers and bottled water and you
can survive till the lights are back on, and the stores reopen. Stick
the canned items into a black cloth bag and lay them on the dash of your
car or truck with the windows all rolled up will warm them up with solar
heat, and make it all go down a lot easier.
That's actually good advise. I live in a area that has mild winters
compared to you guys up north. We get the blackouts in the summer.
Instead of heating on the dash of your car, do you have a propane
camping stove?
If I remember correctly, cigarettes used to be included in military food
rations as well. I hardly think that makes them good for ya, Michael.
Contents of Spam are __far__ from healthy...
a.. Ingredients:
a.. Chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added.
b.. Salt (for binding, flavour, and firmness)
c.. Water (to help in mixing)
d.. Sugar (for flavour)
e.. Sodium Nitrite (for colour and as a preservative)
a.. Nutrition Information For SPAM (original style):
a.. Calories Per Serving: 170
b.. Calories Per Serving From Fat: 140
c.. Serving Size: 2 oz.
d.. Servings Per Container: 6 (large) or 3.5 (small)
e.. Total Fat: 16g
f.. Saturated Fat: 6g
g.. Cholesterol: 40mg
h.. Sodium: 750mg
i.. Total Carbohydrates: 0g
j.. Fiber: 0g
k.. Sugars: 0g
l.. Proteins: 7g
m.. Vitamin A: 0%
n.. Vitamin C: 0%
o.. Calcium: 0%
p.. Iron: 2%
That's 82% calories from fat, and 37% of that is saturated fat. It also
includes a nice bonus of a whopping 40 mg of cholesterol, and no
carbohydrates whatsoever. Or vitamins. Or calcium. But the quantity of salt
covers 1/3 of the recommended daily intake, and you haven't even finished
1/3 of the can! Of course, the container has at least 3.5 servings, so
multiply accordingly.
Yuck.
Sure it's good for ya, if your goal in life is to end up with multiple
bypasses and die of a heart attack. If what you want is protein, a can of
beans is cheaper and healthier for you. Take for example the nutritional
content of 1/2 cup of cooked red beans, which all by its lonesome has 8g of
protein and almost no fat
Calories 112
Total fat (g) 0.4
Saturated fat (g) 0.1
Monounsaturated fat (g) 0
Polyunsaturated fat (g) 0.2
Dietary fiber (g) 6.6
Protein (g) 8
Carbohydrate (g) 20
Cholesterol (mg) 0
Sodium (mg) 2
Folate (mcg) 115
Iron (mg) 2.6
Manganese (mg) 0.4
Phosphorus (mg) 126
You do the math. I'd rather keep a large assortment of beans with a _few_
cans of some sort of lean beef or pork to give some variety, but totally
unnecessary from a nutritional standpoint.
