If I remember correctly, cigarettes used to be included in military food

Contents of Spam are __far__ from healthy...
yes, they did have cigarrettes in the rationsm, but I have never
smoked in my life, so its a non issue. Anyway, they were so dehydrated
that the guys who did try to smoke them got one puff as it burnt right
to their fingers.
a.. Ingredients:
a.. Chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added.
b.. Salt (for binding, flavour, and firmness)
c.. Water (to help in mixing)
d.. Sugar (for flavour)
e.. Sodium Nitrite (for colour and as a preservative)

That's 82% calories from fat, and 37% of that is saturated fat. It also
includes a nice bonus of a whopping 40 mg of cholesterol, and no
carbohydrates whatsoever. Or vitamins. Or calcium. But the quantity of salt
covers 1/3 of the recommended daily intake, and you haven't even finished
1/3 of the can! Of course, the container has at least 3.5 servings, so
multiply accordingly.
Yuck.
Sure it's good for ya, if your goal in life is to end up with multiple
bypasses and die of a heart attack. If what you want is protein, a can of
beans is cheaper and healthier for you. Take for example the nutritional
content of 1/2 cup of cooked red beans, which all by its lonesome has 8g of
protein and almost no fat

Total fat (g) 0.4

You do the math. I'd rather keep a large assortment of beans with a _few_
cans of some sort of lean beef or pork to give some variety, but totally
unnecessary from a nutritional standpoint.

Do what you want, but water was in very short supply after every
hurricane that went through the area. Are you more afraid rtha a couple
meals will kill you that you would starve to death instead? I'm
diabetic, and I HAVE to eat my meals on time. I stick to a VA dietician
approved menu for all but two meals a month. Those two meals are my
choice for what i want to eat and how much. I can do this becasue I
shave a few calories and fat off every meal, every day, the rest of the
time. The last hurricaine I had to go to the county's special needs
shelter due to my disabilites. I was amazed that the food they supplied
was so full of sugar and salt.I also have high blood pressure, and after
some checking I would have been better off eating a can of spam a day,
and nothing else. I took a small cooler with some of my own food, but
it was alomost three weeks before the electricity was back on at my
house.
As far as the saturated fat in Spam, you can scrap or wipe a lot of
it off before you eat it. Also, there is a low fat version of Spam.
