tc-k555 plays for a second - stops (Idiot needs help redux)

I picked up a sony tck555 at goodwill the other day. It seems to be in
good shape - heads look clean, not much dust. The belts seem to be in
good shape, and the large flywheels were clean even before I hit them
with alcohol on a swab.
Trouble is, it will only run for a second or two. (FF, Rev, Play or
record) It doesn't matter if there is a tape in or not. I hit ff,
deck empty, and it zips along for a couple of seconds, then stops.
The problem seems similar to the one that someone decribed in the
thread "idiot needs help fixing $5.00 tape deck"
http://groups.google.com/group/sci.electronics.repair/search?group=sci.electronics.repair&q=idiot+needs+help&qt_g=1&searchnow=Search+this+group
He solved his problem by "poking around again and I noticed that there
seems to be a sensor or fuse of some kind on a small circuit board that
is positioned very close to a magnet attached to the vertical (main)
spindle of the tape counter." He had a Sharp deck with a manual
counter - I have a Sony with a digital counter, and I can't find an
analagous part in my deck.
Any ideas?
