That's because the US was the only country with enough balls to
refuse to let you Nazis force us to change to your French nonsense.

French Nazis? That's new to me.

I don't mind using the imperial system for most things since I grew up
with it, but any work in science or engineering quickly shows what a
hopelessly obsolete and braindead way it is to do things. How many
centimeters in a kilometer could be figured out by any 10 year old in a
few seconds. How many inches in a mile, well give me a piece of paper and
a pencil and I'll have an answer in a couple minutes.

I get a laugh when I hear people going on about our "American" system,
it's not as if we invented it, the imperial system came from England. At
least most of the more obscure units have virtually died, you don't hear
people talking about pecks or bushels of much, or furlongs, leagues,
poles, chains, etc.

We have a real mixture of units in the UK now. Gasoline and most liquids are
sold in litres, but most people still like to think of a car's consumption
in miles per gallon. Speeds and speed limits are still in miles per hour,
but emissions are in kg per km. Beer is still sold in pints, and spirits in
sixths of a gill. Milk is sold in both pints and litres. You can pick up a 4
pinter in some supermarkets, and then find that it's actually a 2 litre
bottle. Weights are now mostly all in kg, under threat of law - some poor
merchants have genuinely been prosecuted for selling vegetables in pounds to
old ladies who don't understand - but some 'loose' items can still be sold
in pounds and ounces. Land is still measured in acres and hectares, and
rods, chains and poles still figure in places in the countryside. Furlongs
are still used to measure the 'less than one' lengths of horse racing
courses. People still blow their tyres up in pounds per square inch, and
aeroplanes still fly in feet above the ground - at least when they are in UK
airspace. Almost all temperature is now quoted in deg Celsius, but in the
case of the weather forecasts, the Farenheit figure is usually bracketed
when it's printed, or given out by a verbal forecaster as "that's 68 degrees
Farenheit !" Older mechanics still tighten bolts to a ft-lb figure. Older
people tend to still measure in feet and inches. Most, even kids, still
measure people's heights in feet and inches, and babies are still quoted as
a pounds and ounces weight at birth. Decimals of a millimetre never seem
right, and many older engineers will still talk in "thous" when in the
sub-millimetre range, but car spark plugs are now gapped in decimal
millimetres.

All of this is nothing to do with the French per se, although they do
consider themselves, along with the Germans, to be the lead nations of
Europe. Nazis certainly don't figure anywhere. Rather, it is as a result of
confused and non joined-up thinking in school teaching, and alternative
acceptance and rejection of EU interference in the running of our country,
depending on which political party is in power, and what posturing stance
they are taking at the time, with a view to furthering their own careers.
Over there in America, you have to understand that Europe is an incredibly
complex self-obsessed machine, that many in the UK do not consider
themselves to be part of- including many politicians from both main parties.
That results in the government of the day cherry-picking the legislations
that Brussels tries to thrust at us as a member state, alternately accepting
it, if it makes them look like they are helping the country, and huffing and
puffing and standing against it, if they think that doing so is preserving
some important centuries-old tradition, and winning them the admiration of
the populace.

And that, Michael, is why we have the mish-mash of measurement units, and
indeed other legislation here, not because we, the British public, have no
balls ...

The "No balls" was referring to Eeyore, and his constant US bashing.
The metric system was French, and the "Nazi", is trying to force the
rest of the world to change, just because Europe did. Celsius is still
based on water state changes, rather than absolute zero. Fahrenheit had
a scale created, and readings taken. All Celsius is, is a new scale
pasted on an old device.
