No, it was just one cap in the supply. The others tested OK ESR-wise so
I first installed something I had around and then got a closer replacement.

C10 & c11 on one board, c4 & c11 on the one that took out the DVD.

Did you change working voltage on the replacement? Some of them are
rated as low as 10WVDC. In other words, is it a matter of cheap caps, or
under value caps?

I have two of these with the crappy supplies. One tests ok. On the other
one the disc spindle motor moves about 1/4 turn in reverse and that's
it. Can't find any obvious blown caps on the controller board.

I'm not sure what's easily swappable in those, but have you tried whatever
is to narrow it down? Probably isn't a cap problem if the power supply
checks out. Does it bahave any different with a disc and without?

No. The spindle motor will move - once - when it's powered on if a disc
is inserted or not. Same behavior with a DVD or audio CD disc inserted.
The unit doesn't power itself off like some units will if there is a
major fault present.

I skipped over the OEM power supply altogether when testing - easy
enough to do with a computer ps - so I know it's being tested with a
working supply. I'd suggest anyone do that for a basic functionality
test before even bothering to replace anything on the ps.

One other note of caution: How cheap are these ps's? On one unit when I
tried to reconnect the AC cord, one of the pins on the board pushed
right through and took the solder pad with it. Note to self: Don't
remove the AC cord unless you have to - you don't.

P.S. I'd suggest replacing all the caps on the ps board even if they
weren't blown. I had different caps blown on both units. There's a UK
web site that lists all parts the guy replaces on the ps with upgrades.

Probably a good idea. There are only a few. But for mine, I have it on a
switched outlet so only gets run when I'm actually using it. :)

Good idea - I hate all this "stand by" mode stuff. That guy I was
talking about - actually has a mail order business set up fixing these
d*amned supplies in the UK.

P.P.S. If you can't convince me the spindle motor problem is a
relatively easy fix you can have the remote for that one. 8-)

Don't give up yet, though there is a question of how much time and effort
to put into a $20 DVD player!

What!? I paid a full $24.99 - each - for mine!!! 8-)

I do like the model - lot's of features. A lot more than the unit I
replaced it with has. Too bad about the power supplies though.

Well, unless you have something really obvious to share I'm about ready
to drop the remote in a bubble mailer and the rest of it in the trash.
The controller board has over 30 caps on it. I could disassemble further
to check continuity on the spindle motor. But if that tests out bad, how
the heck would I get a replacement? Power supplies fritzing out - and
not blowing their own fuse - is nasssty things. Can't find a schematic
for it and the company is no more - at least not in the US.

BTW: Mine are CH-DVD 320. From what I've seen the remote layout and
function is identical on the 300 and the 320 models.
