Most small cells ("batteries") that are charged, use an alkaline-based
paste for the electrolyte.
Overcharging builds up pressure insiide, and a small amount leaks out
- mostly in gaseous form.
Most metals corrode in such surroundings - take the case of corrosion
near saltwater...
