Led's

Ok I have got the harder parts of this all figured out but am having
unexpected problums.
What I am doing is replaceing the stock blinkers from my scooter with
LED's. The stock flasher is crap and would not work because of the
limited current drawn from the LED's. I have got a 555 circut that
works great at flashing them. But here is where my problum lies. The
existing flasher has 1 hot lead to it, it is hot all the time. and
when I throw the existing switch the leads coming from the switch are
both hot. I don't have my multimeter here but on my test light the
nonselected side will be dimmer than the side that is selleceted.
Therefore I know it is getting voltage even though it should be off.
This is bad because i only want one side to flash at a time since it
is for the blinkers on the scooter.
Can someone give me an idea of a switch that would work to fix this. I
am thinking I can put in a relay to trigger the flasher but would I
have to have 2 switches? one to energize the relay and one to switch
left or right?
Or would I be able to do both turn on the flasher an select the side I
wantwith one switch?
I am horrible at switchs. I hope this was clear enough for some help,
I thank you in advance.
Kent
