Right. A niche market. But our overall market includes a lot of niche
markets. A really large amount of our food in Seattle comes from farms 1-200
miles away over the mountains. This is not a small niche. I don't have a
good idea of how big it is for the rest of the nation. I know LA has a huge
truck infrastructure drawing food from the farming regions that must average
1-200 miles. It would not be a trivial change to put all that into electric
rail with shorter say electric truck transport to and from the rail heads,
and I am nut sure it is possible or practical for the widely dispersed
farms. So I figure you must always have some of this niche to provide for
and that some may be quite a bit.
Would replacing crude oil with coal/nuclear/solar synthesis be more
contaminating? Not so sure. The oil is located in different places and
doesn't produce so much solid waste, but I am not so sure there is that much
overall difference. Yes coal is nasty stuff. So, unfortunately, is doing
without.
