Well technically, hydrogen is an element, that we extract from compounds such
as water or methane. Free hydrogen gas has potential energy in much the same
sense as water behind a dam. By combining this hydrogen with oxygen, you could
drive a car.
Some people have a problem with hydrogen, they keep pointing to the fact that
it takes more energy to obtain the hydrogen than it produces to drive the car.
Well the car does not obtain the hydrogen, the car only uses it as fuel. They
object to a car that doesn't use ready-to-burn fuel in the ground or
electricity directly from the power plant. To get around this problem why not
simply have a power plant that produces hydrogen instead of electricity.
Electricity is simply freed electrons, hydrogen molecules are simply bigger and
the can flow in a pipe as electricity does in a wire.
