I thought there wasn't any real problem with placing capacitors in
series as long as they had matching specs.

These are 2700 Farad, 2.5V units that appear to be used in
both parallel and serial to provide more capacity. They even
have a sizing work*** to tell you how many you need in both
parallel and serial to get the storage you require.
